Lady Techsters

From national champion and Olympic gold medalist to WNBA legend and now head coach of the Chicago Sky, Teresa Weatherspoon’s career has been remarkable. Born in Pineland, Texas, she was inspired by her father’s athletic achievements. At Louisiana Tech, she led the Lady Techsters to the 1988 NCAA National Championship, redefining the point guard role with her fierce defense and leadership. By the end of her college career, she averaged 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 7 assists, leaving an enduring legacy in women’s basketball.

The WNBA Years: Building a Legacy

After eight successful years playing professionally overseas in Italy, Russia, and France, Weatherspoon made her triumphant return to the United States as one of the WNBA’s inaugural players in 1997. She joined the New York Liberty and immediately became the face of the franchise. Her gritty style of play, relentless defense, and clutch performances quickly made her a fan favorite and a cornerstone of the league. In her rookie season, Weatherspoon led the Liberty to the WNBA Finals, marking the beginning of New York’s dominance in the league’s early years. The Liberty made another Finals appearance in 1999, solidifying their place as one of the top teams of that era. That same year, Weatherspoon created one of the most unforgettable moments in WNBA history: a half-court, buzzer-beating shot in Game 2 of the Finals, sending the series to a decisive Game 3. It was an iconic play that not only showcased her poise under pressure but also etched her name into the fabric of WNBA lore.

Known for her relentless on-ball defense, Weatherspoon was named the WNBA’s Defensive Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons (1997 and 1998), further cementing her status as one of the greatest defenders the league has ever seen. But it wasn’t just about her physical skills—her leadership, basketball IQ, and ability to elevate her teammates made her one of the most respected figures in the game.

From Player to Coach: A Natural Evolution

Weatherspoon’s transition from player to coach felt natural. Even during her playing days, she shared her basketball knowledge, publishing Teresa Weatherspoon’s Basketball for Girls in 1999. Her passion for mentoring led her to coaching, starting in 2007 with the Westchester Phantoms in the ABA (American Basketball Association). By 2009, she became head coach at Louisiana Tech, leading the team to two WAC championships and several NCAA appearances. Her collegiate success caught the NBA’s attention, and she joined the New Orleans Pelicans as an assistant coach. Weatherspoon's ability to connect with players, like Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, earned her widespread respect.

In October 2023, Teresa Weatherspoon made her much-anticipated return to the WNBA as head coach of the Chicago Sky, bringing excitement and high expectations. Known for her defensive mindset and player-first approach, she has already made an impact on the team. Players, like rookie Angel Reese, praised her influence, with Reese saying, "She means everything to me… She understands me on and off the court." Under Weatherspoon’s leadership, the Sky now lead the league in defensive rebounds after ranking ninth last season. Despite injuries and roster changes, her ability to manage rotations and inspire her players has been evident. Fans and analysts are eager to see the Sky’s potential with a fully healthy roster next year, as the team looks poised to become a dominant force in the league.
